Re: John Deere 140 need info auction tomorrow

I use mine pretty exclusively. They are a very good machine. That one looks like it only has 1 hydraulic lever, so it is a little less desirable. Also, if it is the earlier model, the earlier ones had a weaker axle. The later models had a set of 1" spindles in the front which is nice if it get used for work. I don't really know what else to say other than I would say if it runs and given it is an H1, I would probably offer a max of $800. Up here in CT, those would pull about $1100 on CL.

Re: John Deere 140 need info auction tomorrow

I hope all the crud shown in the photo washes off and isn't paint or some other hard to remove substance. If it runs well, and everything works, tires hold air, no jerkiness in the hydro, I'd say a good ballpark number would be $750. That looks to be the original mower deck, so I'd check that out VERY thoroughly. Any attachments would boost the price up of course. Does he have wheel weights or other goodies to go with it??

If it's FREE, it's for ME!

ALWAYS remember to remove the spark plug wire from the plug before sticking your hand in the machine!!!! The fingers you save could be your own.

Great tractor. Looks like the rims may be full of calcium as I see the rust around the valve stem. If it run, drives and everything works with no big leaks.... Being an H1 - I would say max of $750 - $800.

You never know what they will sell for. Depends who is there and how bad they want it.

Here's a link to one I watched sell at a local auction a few years ago. IIRC, the whole package went for $800.

Nice find.. The 140 Is/was one of the first true Garden tractors, And they have a Large selection on attachments . Now as to the Price. As stated in prior posts , They would sell in the Northwest From $750.00 To $1000.00 . Even more if any attachments , and the rear PTO. is with the tractor. I rebuilt 11 of them And sold them. I would find They if Restored correctly , They would bring Top Dollar. This is About half way trough there Mfg. Year. It has The Frame Point Cut out. Along with the PTO clutch . Much desired. Only draw Bach. H1.
Buy it.. Have fun.. Life is good.. I had a slug of 140 pictures. My computer ate them I guess, They're Gone;

At auction based on those pictures I would be in at 650-750 tops. I bought an all original '74 140 H3 for $900 at auction.

Re: John Deere 140 need info auction tomorrow

if it runs well I'd go $500-600. The H1's don't bring as much as the coveted H3's. I got a nice original H1 with a rusted out deck a couple years ago for $450.

Re: John Deere 140 need info auction tomorrow

And if you start the bidding, start really low. And avoid letting emotions draw you into a bidding war with someone. I've watched people buy things for rediculous prices because they didn't want to lose. Also remember that you will be adding a percentage of the sale price to the total to cover the auctioneer's commission, plus sales tax if applicable. At local auctions a person with a winning bid of $500 would be handing over $577.50 to own it.

One thing I always keep in mind is there is usually a reason it's at an auction. More than likely someone doesn't want to be connected to it after the sale in the event of problems. Local JD dealers usually unload their low value trade-ins at the local auctions. You can get a great deal or a nightmare. It's a real crapshoot.

Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Oh well. Look on the bright side- your money is still in your wallet.

We have two auctions a year about a mile from me. The next one is late April.
Will be there.
