Question front PTO shaft for x758

I have a 455 that I use a rotary broom and snow blower. I don't think the 455's PTO will work on the x758. Is there such a thing as a PTO shaft extension?
Thanks.

Re: front PTO shaft for x758

if the outer part of the shaft is on the broom.. u may get a longer inner part that will fit the X758..

Re: front PTO shaft for x758

Are you referring to this shaft or mid pto shaft? May depend on which quick hitch you are using. 455 hitch or x7 hitch. Are you using the broom and snowblower from the 455 on the x758? Noticed parts catalog also specs 2wd and 4wd up to serial 040000.

My mistake, it is the approximately 5' long pto shaft that runs from under the seat to just below the grill on a 455. Would that be the mid-pto?

The quick hitch fits a 455.

Re: front PTO shaft for x758

The 4x4 uses a completely different front shaft.

Yes mid pto. 455 mid pto won't work on a x758.
x758 is a 4x4? Parts catalog show 2wd and 4wd up to serial 040000. Also 4x4 mid pto has 2 versions, before 040000 serial and after 040000.

Is there somewhere online I can go to look for parts numbers? I'd like to buy a used mid-pto if possible.

JD Parts should have the numbers, and I think Mutton Power had a useful chart explaining what goes with what.

You can look on ebay, but those driveshafts are a tough find, and when you do you might find it would be cheaper to smelt one out of gold. That is why I grabbed my model 47 blower with the right drive shafts for my x748 when I found it. The blower was ridden hard and put away wet but I had to do it. That deal is still the only match I've found to my machine in a year of looking.

I wonder why the mutton site doesn't have a mid-pto column.

iowguy,

It would very hard to find a used mid to front PTO shaft for a 4WD/AWD as the pass-through shaft which goes through the front axle usually will stay with the machine once it is installed. The original plugs/seals (M810730) that need to be taken out in order to install the pass-through shaft are usually misplaced or discarded.

The current John Deere part number for the Front PTO kit for your X758 is BM25305 and is called a Universal Driveshaft.

How involved is it to take off and put on the shaft?

iowguy,

Once the pass-through shaft is installed in your front axle (which you don't remove) the mid PTO shaft is very easy to install.

1) Align the splines and slide the front part of the mid PTO shaft onto the pass-through shaft.
2) Pull back on the rear locking ring and slide the rear part of the mid PTO shaft onto mid PTO shaft that is on the rear transaxle.
3) Release rear locking ring.

It should take less than 30 seconds to install this shaft.

I guess it's safe to assume that the pass through shaft is much more difficult to install.

What tools do I need to install that?
