Nicks 332 restoration and everything thread!

From now on everything related to the 332 will go here, since it's never really had its own thread. Some of you may have seen the teaser pic, and yes, it is restoration time! It'll be slow going with other obligations, but it will take place here along with any other encounters it may have.

For all the newer members (and anyone who happens to care) the first pics are what it looked like the day I got it. It's a 1991 332, with 614 hours when I brought it home. It now has 715 hours.

It was missing side panels and a grille, but I found them relatively easily. I completely went through it when I first got it, replacing all the fuel line and grommets, thermostat and temp sensor just to be safe. I also rebuilt the injectors shortly after purchase. The only other issue I've had with it is a fried TDCM, and I replaced with a new one. I'll get more into that once we get to that stage. So, enough blabbering, here she is! Last pic is how it looks right now.

Re: Nicks 332 restoration and everything thread!

So I started with the hood, because obviously the original hood was junk so I knew I could leave it on it and work on my other hood while keeping it operational for blowing duty. I'll let the pictures explain themselves, but basically there were two cracks that needed repair...

Re: Nicks 332 restoration and everything thread!

Once I got that hood ready for paint, I was given the nicest original non cracked hood I've seen (did have plenty of scratches though). Couldn't say no to that! Previous hood went on the rafters for a future project, and I started the process over with the new hood! I only use real jd paint with hardener, then decided to try cutting and buffing. After paint I wet sanded with 2000, then 2500, then 3000 and then 5000 before buffing.

It's not perfect. I was hesitant to keep sanding. I'll probably sand a little more in the couple of areas that could use it. It's hard to take sand paper to a new paint job!

That's where it sits for now. I'm going to try to keep it operational as long as I can, so next up will be side panels, grille grille support and wheels (I have two sets). Then it'll have to come apart.

Looks good Can't wait, you get a easy tractor I had to start with pure junk I wish my tractor only had 700 hours! So are you taking it as far down as your 140 including the engine and things like that?

Re: Nicks 332 restoration and everything thread!

I won't rebuild the engine. It purrs like a kitty and with low hours there's no reason too. Same with the transmission, although I will replace some seals in it while they're more accessible.

Im so jealous of your tractor its not fair guess I guess I need to rebuild mine now so I'll have lower hours ........... NOTmy wallet hurts enough from the the injectors and glow plugs and power steering cylinder and valve cover gasket that cost me $25 which is ridiculous but hey they had it in stock. Also did you get my friend request?

Nice paint job Nick. I didn't know that you were such a good painter. Are you using JD thinner and hardener? I've had better luck with napa thinner because I can get it to match the temps I paint at.

Thanks! It's jd thinner and the Valpar hardener that the dealer sells. I painted in a garage heated by a wood stove. Got it about 75 degrees in there, although cool air was coming around the fan. Turned out good though. There are a couple of small areas that could be cut a little more, and I'll do it a little later on. I need a change of scenery besides hoods!

It actually laid down like glass, but being a garage it got a few dirt specs so that's why I decided to try cut and polishing.

Re: Nicks 332 restoration and everything thread!

Only thing new to report is that I received a new foam kit from John Lang. I dont know if your a member here or not John, but if so thank you! It all looks great! I havent put the hood portion on yet though, so no new pictures yet.

Hopefully this weekend Ill get to blasting off powder coat from the side panels. Have I mentioned I hate powder coat? I REALLY hate powder coat...
