I wouldn't be so worried about the 1 1/4" PVC wearing down (As long as it's schedule 40) , I made a trellis for my beans in the garden (almost 30 feet long) and despite having all the weight of the bean plants on them has barely sagged. I've also made ladders using PVC (fence post inside) and my 216 lb butt has yet to break one, though years of use with grimy boots wore through the PVC and it has now been retired into the chicken pen as a roost. I'm 27 so "years" translates to about 9 now. I've been on my own since 14 though, so PVC has made me many a piece of furniture. (It's cheap y'know? )
