From what it looks like to me, you need to gusset along each weld when you weld it back together. You might think about adding another arm weld on each side also. Didn't look like a good penetration on the original weld. Just my thoughts.

Re: 54" Rear Blade Broke

Take your time and get a good penetrating weld when you repair. If I have gleaned anything from the guys and gals here is take your time and do it right. It should be better than new when you get done.

Re: 54" Rear Blade Broke

I agree with hamman. It looks as if there was a minimum penetration of the original welds. Clean well, take your time and consider adding a gusset at the top and bottom of the arms.

Re: 54" Rear Blade Broke

Thats the exact spot that mine broke, except yours broke nice and straight.
Mine got all bent up and i really have nothing to straighten it up. I have a vice and a big hammer...lol...i got it pretty straight but needs to be redone. I was in a hurry cus i needed to use it right away so i did the best i could to straighten it and re welded it and it did the job for the winter but with summer jobs coming it will need to be done better.

Re: 54" Rear Blade Broke

The weld looks cold. If you have an O/A or propane torch, I'd preheat it real good before welding. Might want to grind that out and reweld w/ preheat. It's difficult to weld metal that thick w/ 135 amps. Just crank 'er up all the way, you don't have to worry about burnthru w/ this weld.
I'm sure you plan to, but weld both sides of the joint.

Mike

Re: 54" Rear Blade Broke

I agree the weld does look a bit cold. Also it looks as there is only one pass. I'd of ground it down and done 3 passes with preheat, a good root pass then a couple finish welds to strengthen it up.

It's gotta be Morel season soon......

Re: 54" Rear Blade Broke

I'd get rid of the weld and start over w/ the preheat.

Re: 54" Rear Blade Broke

I agree on oreheat. My HH140 needs a little help once in a while when I get on thicher stuff. Once I get my new garage wired this spring I will be able to use my stick welder for thicker stuff. Look like you did a good job so far.Don't foget to back weld the joints. It woun't take long to get it done.

Bevel it in and weld with 308-15 stainless, 1/8 " . You'll never get enough pen with a wire feed.

Re: 54" Rear Blade Broke

Expanding on my answer above.

Looking at the color of the metal both farther back and at the weld itself I'm going to assume it a poor grade of metal to start with. I've ran into this with some of my own equipt. The cheap rototiller I bought had to be cheap imported-read chinese- steel. Low grades shatter like cast iron does and does not weld well with standard techniques. thats why you were advised properly to preheat. But also use the stainless rod when aheres better. You could use FN-86 at $40 or so a pound but thats expensive and hard to find.
