Default Stihl 028 oil leak

I havent looked into the problem yet but was wondering if anybody had any ideas before I open it up. I havent used the saw in about 4 months and today I get it out of the corner to find a pool of oil under it and the tank empty. Is there a gasket in there or tube or anything? I've never really opened up a chainsaw before so I was kinda wondering. Didnt want to open it up to find a spring pop out or something.

PS Oil cap doesnt leak. I added more oil and used the saw and then watched it slowely drip out of the bottom .

I have a 028 also. It always has leaked the bar oil out the bottom when left sitting a long time I just sit it on a 5 gal. bucket so as not to make a mess. I always figgured by leakkng that the oiler was not stopped up & that was a good thing .

Is there a way to verify that the oiling system is working properly?

Would it be wise to drain the oil out after each use if its going to be sitting for an extended period of time?

Also, is a Stihl supplier the only place to get OEM parts? I had an accident with a log and the handle lol.

I have an 028 that leaks a little, not enough to get excited about. I just keep it in the case so it doesn't get on the floor.

Mine does the same.
To verify if the oiler is working properly:
Run saw and aim chain / bar at tree or some object. Rev saw and oil should sling some oil onto object. If it doesn't something may be wrong.

Most older "auto" oilers on saws worked off of crankcase vacuum that had a diaphram and needle of some sort that allowed oil to flow through a passage to the chain. As the saws aged, the diaphrams got stiff, and wouldn't self check themselves and hold back oil after shutting down. My older Mac's were notorious and pooling oil everywhere they sat. The newer gear driven pumps only supply oil as the chain spins, allowing for more positive oil control both as the saw is used, and stops all oil supply when the chain is at rest. As munderhill said, as long as it's slinging oil at speed, you're okay. Leaking oil will only be corrected by replacing the pump diaphram. Never done this to a Stihl. Maybe be worth the effort though.

You may want to try Stihl's website.

I'll scan an exploded view & post it tomorrow. On my 034, it leaked where the tube from the tank hits the oil pump. The tube is a $8 rubber part. The oil pump bolts on and is "smashed into" the flared end of the rubber tube. The tube stiffens over time causing the leak. You have to remove the side cover, bar, plate, and clutch to get to the oil pump. remve the 2 torx screws and move the pump out of the way. you'll see the flat end of the tube. grab it with needle nose & it'll pull out of the tank.

yes for OEM they are the only places you can always look for used parts somewhere like parts saws etc. i notice ebay has tons of them sometimes Echo has the same kind of parts that will interchange with stihl parts

I don't have a manual, just some exploded views my dealer gave me for my 034. Maybe they are similar?

I labeled things prior to scanning, the oil pump sits against the rubber oil tube. There's 2 torx headed screws that hold the oil pump onto the saw, thus, transferring pressure to the oil tube. It's very easy to take apart to "explore"

Let me know if I can be of any further assistance. Although I'm not a Stihl Tech, I'm a pretty good tinkerer.

This may sound foolish, but sometimes the oil cap itself can leak. I use my plug wrench to tighten my oil and gas caps so they don't vibrate loose while using the saw,and I have seen where using the plug wrench has chewed away enough of the plastic on the cap to cause the cap itself to leak.

That is easy to spot so I doubt that is your problem, but still thought I would post this as another potential leaking spot.

Shoot.
Got any pics of the carb area?
I've got a box full of parts, and no big picture.
There are a bunch of washers, and bolts, and spacers.
Thanks!

I can't help ya there. Next time I pass my local Stihl dealer, I'll see if he'll print me the sheets.
